Marché de la Place du Barlet
Every Saturday morning the Place du Barlet fills with stalls piled high with regional cheeses, seasonal vegetables, fresh fish from the Opal Coast and warm gaufres de Lille. This is where Douaisiens actually shop, and the atmosphere is wonderfully unhurried.
What to look for at the stalls
Head straight for the fromagers selling Maroilles and Mimolette — both are northern staples you should taste on the spot with a chunk of crusty bread. The charcutiers usually offer free samples of andouille and smoked sausages that pair perfectly with a coffee from the nearby cafés.
Seasonal produce here is hyper-local: strawberries from Noyelles-Godault in spring, white asparagus in April and May, and pumpkins in every shade of orange come October. Arrive before 10 am for the best choice before the crowds thin out the good stuff.
Beyond the food
A cluster of flower sellers occupies the southern end of the square, turning it into a riot of colour from March through September. A small brocante section on the eastern edge offers vintage enamelware, old postcards and the occasional Flemish oil painting at very reasonable prices.
The market wraps up by noon, so combine it with a stroll along the Scarpe riverbanks immediately afterward while your bag is still full of good things to eat at the water's edge.
