La Terrasse de l'Hôtel de Ville

Set in a vaulted ground-floor space beneath the monumental Hôtel de Ville, this beloved Douai brasserie serves proper northern French cooking — carbonnade flamande, potjevleesch and a superb tarte au Maroilles — at prices that feel almost too reasonable for the setting.

What to order

The carbonnade flamande is the dish to anchor your meal: slow-braised beef cooked in local amber ale with a thick slice of pain d'épices on top, served with hand-cut frites that arrive in a small iron pot. It is rich, warming and exactly what the grey skies of northern France call for.

For a lighter option the waterzooi de poisson — a creamy Flemish fish stew — is consistently excellent. Finish with a tarte au sucre, the flat, caramelised sugar tart that is as Douaisien as the belfry itself, and order a local Jenlain Ambrée to wash it all down.

The setting and atmosphere

The dining room sits beneath stone arches that date to the 17th century, and the hum of local conversation, the clink of glasses and the smell of slow-cooked beer-braised meat create an atmosphere that no amount of interior design could manufacture artificially.

Lunch is the best time to visit: a two-course formule is available on weekdays for around €15, making it extraordinary value. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings when Douai's regulars fill every table.
