Museo della Fine della Guerra (Palazzo Manzi)
Inside the elegant 17th-century Palazzo Manzi on Dongo's lakefront, a small but genuinely moving museum documents the final, chaotic days of the Italian Social Republic and the capture of Mussolini just metres from where you stand. It is one of the most historically charged rooms on the entire lake.
The story of 27 April 1945
On the morning of 27 April 1945, a column of retreating German trucks and Italian Fascist officials was stopped at a partisan checkpoint on the lakeside road just north of Dongo. Mussolini was found hiding under a German greatcoat in one of the lorries.
The palazzo became the improvised headquarters for the partisan commanders who had to decide, within hours, what to do with the captured dictator — a decision that would end with his execution at Giulino di Mezzegra the following day.
The museum displays original documents, photographs, partisan armbands and period newspapers that convey the breathless pace of those final hours with admirable restraint.
What the collection holds
Among the most striking exhibits are the so-called 'Dongo gold and currency' ledgers — records of the large quantity of foreign currency, gold and valuables seized from the Fascist convoy, whose ultimate fate remains one of Italy's great postwar mysteries.
Period maps on the walls show the exact route of the retreating column and the positions of the partisan brigades of the 52nd Garibaldi Brigade, making the military geography of the capture easy to follow even for non-specialists.
The curators have deliberately kept the display text factual and free of triumphalism, letting the documents speak — an approach that makes the museum feel serious and trustworthy rather than propagandistic.
