Mercato Settimanale di Dongo

Every Thursday morning Dongo's waterfront and the streets fanning back from Piazza Matteotti fill with the stalls of the weekly market — a proper working market that serves the communities of the upper lake rather than a tourist showcase, which makes it all the more rewarding to wander.

What the stalls sell

Produce vendors from the valleys behind Dongo bring seasonal vegetables, mountain cheeses and cured meats that you will not find in Como city supermarkets — look for the pungent semi-aged formaggi di malga (alpine pasture cheeses) and the dark, coarse-ground buckwheat flour used in traditional Valtellina cooking.

Alongside the food stalls you will find hardware, fabric, cheap clothing and household goods — the market serves a practical local function, and that mix of the mundane and the delicious is exactly what makes it feel authentic.

A handful of stalls sell local honey, dried mushrooms and grappa-soaked fruit preserves that make ideal, lightweight gifts to carry home in a backpack.

How to shop like a local

Arrive before 9:00 to catch the best selection of fresh produce and to see the market at its most animated, when the stall-holders are still setting up and the banter between neighbours is at full volume.

Do not skip the van parked near the ferry landing that sells freshly fried panzerotti and arancini — it appears most market mornings and draws a loyal queue of locals who treat it as a standing Thursday ritual.

The market winds down by 12:30, after which the piazza reverts to its usual lakeside calm and the bars fill with vendors and shoppers taking an aperitivo before lunch.
