Restaurante La Dehesa
La Dehesa is the kind of no-nonsense Extremaduran restaurant where the menu reads like a love letter to the dehesa landscape: acorn-fed ibérico pork in every form, slow-cooked lamb from the Serena plateau and a wine list built around local Ribera del Guadiana bottles. The dining room is unfussy and the portions are legendary.
What to order
Start with a tabla of hand-carved jamón ibérico de bellota and a wedge of Torta del Casar — the runny, pungent sheep's-milk cheese from the Cáceres highlands that you eat by scooping with bread. A glass of chilled Ribera del Guadiana white made from Cayetana Blanca grapes is the perfect companion.
For mains, the secreto ibérico — a fatty, marbled cut from the shoulder — grilled over encina wood coals is the dish that regulars drive from Badajoz to eat. If it's on the daily specials board, order it without hesitation.
Atmosphere and local context
Lunch is the main event in Don Benito, as in all of Extremadura: the restaurant fills from 14:00 and the noise level rises happily as the afternoon progresses. Dinner is quieter and more relaxed.
The staff are proud of their regional sourcing and will happily tell you exactly which farm the lamb came from — a conversation that usually ends with a complimentary glass of orujo.
