Parque Natural de Cornalvo & Vegas Altas Wetlands
Within easy day-trip distance of Don Benito, the Vegas Altas del Guadiana wetlands and the nearby Parque Natural de Cornalvo form one of Extremadura's most rewarding wildlife corridors. Flamingos, black storks and greater spotted eagles are all possible sightings, often before breakfast.

From October through February, the flooded rice paddies of the Vegas Altas — many within 15 km of Don Benito — host tens of thousands of wintering cranes (grullas) alongside spoonbills, glossy ibis and occasionally lesser white-fronted geese. The sound of cranes calling at dawn is one of the great wildlife spectacles of continental Europe.
The best access points are the rural tracks around Valdivia and Medellín, both reachable by car in under 20 minutes from Don Benito. A pair of binoculars and a dawn start are the only equipment you need.
Parque Natural de Cornalvo
Cornalvo, about 40 km west of Don Benito near Mérida, centres on a Roman dam and reservoir that has been supplying water since the 1st century AD. Today it's a protected natural park of holm-oak dehesa, red deer and otters, with well-marked hiking trails circling the lake.
The 11 km circular trail around the reservoir takes 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace and passes the remarkably intact Roman dam wall — a surreal engineering relic rising from the tree line. Picnic spots beside the water are shaded and rarely crowded on weekdays.
