The Guadiana River curves quietly through the vegas just south of Don Benito, and the informal riverside viewpoint along the Paseo Fluvial offers an unexpectedly cinematic panorama of water, poplar groves and the distant Serena hills. Sunset here turns the river copper and the sky deep amber.
The walk to get there
A flat, well-maintained riverside path stretches for several kilometres south from the town's edge, passing through stands of white poplar and tamarisk that shelter herons, egrets and — in spring — clouds of bee-eaters flashing turquoise and gold.
The best elevated vantage point is near the old irrigation sluice gates, where the river bends and you can see the reflection of the sky doubling the colour show. It's a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute cycle from the town centre.
Wildlife and seasonal highlights
Spring (April–May) is peak season: storks nest on every available chimney and rooftop in Don Benito, and the river banks fill with wildflowers — asphodels, poppies and wild lavender — that make the foreground of any photo instantly magazine-worthy.
In summer, local families come at dusk with folding chairs and cold drinks; it's a wholly authentic slice of Extremaduran evening life that no guidebook has yet turned into a tourist ritual.
