Wednesday & Saturday Market on Place du Général de Gaulle
Twice a week the broad Place du Général de Gaulle and the streets fanning off Boulevard Gassendi fill with stalls that are defiantly, gloriously local — this is not a tourist market dressed up for cameras, but the real weekly shop for Dignois families. Arrive before 9 am to beat the crowds and catch the best produce.
What to Buy
Look for crystallised lavender honey from apiaries in the Valensole plateau, rounds of Banon goat's cheese wrapped in chestnut leaves, and fat Sisteron lamb chops from the butcher who sets up near the fountain every Saturday.
The spice stall on the eastern side of the square sells herbes de Provence in hand-tied bundles alongside dried lavender buds and a ferocious home-blended harissa that locals queue for.
Beyond the Food
A handful of brocante (second-hand) dealers set up on Saturday mornings with mismatched Provençal faïence, old postcards of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the occasional enamel advertising sign — ideal slow browsing after a café crème at one of the pavement terraces on the square.
The market wraps up around 12:30, after which the square reverts to its sleepy self — perfect timing for a long lunch at a nearby bistro with whatever you've just bought.
