Panorama from the Rocher de la Bonne Mère (Notre-Dame du Bourg Hill)
Climb the rocky path behind the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Bourg and within 15 minutes you reach a natural limestone belvedere that frames Digne in a full panoramic sweep — the Bléone valley, the lavender-blue ridges of the pre-Alps and, on clear days, the snowy outline of the Mercantour massif. Sunset here is genuinely spectacular.
The Climb and the Reward
The path starts at the rear of the Romanesque cathedral (12th–14th century, worth a quick visit for its Byzantine-influenced frescoes) and winds up through garrigue scrub fragrant with wild thyme and rosemary.
At the top a small iron cross marks the highest point; benches face west, making this the town's unofficial sunset terrace. Locals bring wine and charcuterie on summer evenings — joining them feels entirely natural.
The Cathedral Below
Notre-Dame du Bourg itself is Digne's oldest and most architecturally interesting church, predating the newer cathedral in the town centre by several centuries. Its Lombard-Romanesque façade and the fragmentary medieval frescoes inside are worth 20 minutes of your time before or after the ascent.
The surrounding neighbourhood of narrow lanes and stone houses is one of the quietest corners of the town — almost entirely free of tourist infrastructure, which is precisely its charm.
