Cova de la Barreta & the Júcar River Gorge Walk
Just two kilometres inland from Cullera's beach crowds, the Júcar river squeezes through a narrow limestone gorge studded with caves, and the short trail to the Cova de la Barreta is one of the most dramatically beautiful — and almost entirely overlooked — walks in the entire Valencian Community.
The gorge and its cave
The Cova de la Barreta is a large natural cave opening directly onto the sheer rock face above the Júcar, accessible via a signed footpath that begins near the Molí de la Font restaurant on the CV-550 road. The walk in takes about 25 minutes on a well-maintained but narrow path that hugs the cliff edge above the river — wear proper footwear and keep children close.
Inside the cave the temperature drops immediately to a cool 16 °C and the silence is total. Archaeologists have found Neolithic and Bronze Age remains here, and the views back down the gorge from the cave mouth are simply extraordinary: a vertical drop to green water far below, framed by white limestone walls.
Extending the walk along the river
From the cave you can continue on the PR-V 178 trail, which follows the north bank of the Júcar upstream for several kilometres through fig trees, oleander and wild rosemary. The path eventually reaches the old Molí de la Murta flour mill, a photogenic ruin draped in ivy that makes a perfect turning point for a half-day outing.
Early morning in spring is the peak season for this walk: the wildflowers are out, the river runs high and green, and you are very likely to have the entire gorge to yourself. In summer, start before 08:00 to beat the heat in the canyon.
