All i Pebre at Restaurante La Matandeta

All i pebre — a fiery, paprika-red stew of Albufera eels cooked with garlic, potato and ñora peppers — is the dish that defines this stretch of the Valencian coast, and La Matandeta in Albalat de la Ribera (15 minutes from Cullera) is one of the most respected places to eat it properly.

A dish rooted in the lagoon

The recipe has barely changed in two centuries: live eels from the Albufera are cleaned to order, then braised low and slow with crushed garlic, dried ñora peppers, paprika and olive oil until the sauce turns a deep, glossy brick-red. The potatoes soak up the broth and become the best part of the bowl.

All i pebre is emphatically not tourist food — it is the weekday lunch of fishermen and rice farmers, and eating it in a proper casa de menjars (family dining house) rather than a beachfront restaurant makes all the difference to authenticity and price.

Where to eat it near Cullera

La Matandeta (Carretera Albalat de la Ribera, km 2) has been run by the same family for decades and sources its eels directly from Albufera fishermen. The dining room is unfussy, the portions are enormous and the house wine is a cold, dry Valencian white that cuts perfectly through the richness of the stew.

If you want to stay closer to Cullera itself, Restaurante El Sequiol on the lagoon road also does a reliable all i pebre alongside a solid arròs a banda (rice cooked in fish stock, served separately from the fish).
