Corralejo Weekly Market (Mercadillo de Corralejo)

Every Tuesday and Friday morning, a lively open-air market fills the streets near the harbour area of Corralejo, drawing a mix of local artisans, Canarian food producers and international traders. It is the best place in the north of Fuerteventura to pick up hand-made jewellery, local goat's cheese and aloe vera products direct from the growers.

What to Buy

Fuerteventura is famous across Spain for its majorero goat's cheese — a PDO-protected product with a distinctive orange-rind version rubbed in paprika or gofio. Several cheese producers bring wheels directly to the market; tasting before buying is expected and encouraged.

Local aloe vera is grown extensively on the island and sold here as gels, creams and juices at a fraction of resort-shop prices. Look also for hand-painted ceramic tiles, woven palm-leaf baskets and locally designed linen clothing.

Food and Atmosphere

A cluster of food stalls near the centre of the market sells freshly made papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with mojo rojo and mojo verde sauces, grilled chorizo sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies. Arrive hungry.

The atmosphere is genuinely festive — local musicians occasionally set up near the entrance, and the mix of languages (Spanish, German, English, Dutch) reflects Corralejo's cosmopolitan character. Bargaining is acceptable but not aggressive; a smile goes further than hard negotiating.

Practical Tips

The market runs from approximately 9 am to 2 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. It is located near Avenida Juan Carlos I in the centre of Corralejo — easily walkable from most hotels and apartments in the town centre.

Go early for the best cheese selection and to avoid the midday heat. Bring cash — while some stalls accept cards, many prefer euros in hand. A reusable bag is useful as plastic is discouraged.
