Via Fieschi & Corniglia's Caruggio

Via Fieschi is the single main artery of Corniglia — a narrow, car-free lane barely wide enough for two people to pass comfortably, flanked by medieval stone houses painted in faded ochre, terracotta and sage green. It is the entire village in one street: bakeries, wine bars, a handful of trattorias, the parish church and the daily life of a community that has changed remarkably little in its esse

What to Find on the Street

At the northern end, Enoteca Il Pirun (named after the local dialect word for a wine flask) pours Cinque Terre DOC Bianco and the rare Sciacchetrà passito by the glass from a window hatch — you take your plastic cup and stand in the alley, which is exactly what the locals do on any given evening.

Bakeries along the street sell focaccia al formaggio and trofie pasta to go, and the smell of farinata — a thin chickpea-flour pancake baked in a wood oven — drifts out of doorways from around 11 am onwards. It is the definitive Ligurian street snack and costs about €2 a slice.

The Pace and the People

Corniglia has a permanent population of only around 150–200 people, and Via Fieschi reflects that intimacy: the same faces appear at the same tables at the same hours, the bar owner knows every regular by name, and the afternoon passeggiata is a genuine local ritual rather than a performance for tourists.

The side alleys — called caruggi in Ligurian dialect — branching off Via Fieschi lead to tiny private gardens, drying laundry strung between windows and sudden gaps in the stone walls that frame perfect slivers of the sea far below. Wandering them slowly, with no particular destination, is the best thing you can do in Corniglia.
