Belvedere di Santa Maria Belvedere
Perched at roughly 100 metres above the Ligurian Sea, Corniglia's clifftop terrace delivers the most vertiginous panorama in all of Cinque Terre — a sweeping arc of cobalt water, terraced vineyards and the neighbouring villages of Manarola and Vernazza floating on the horizon. Arrive at golden hour and the light turns the stone houses the colour of warm honey.
The View Itself
Stand at the low stone wall on the western edge of the village and you will see Manarola's colourful stack of houses clinging to its promontory to the south, with Vernazza's natural harbour visible as a tiny crescent to the north — both in the same frame without moving your feet.
The terrace sits beside the Church of San Pietro, whose Gothic rose window faces the sea, so you can combine a quick peek inside the 14th-century church with the panorama in under twenty minutes.
When and How to Get There
The belvedere faces west-southwest, making late afternoon the magic window: the sun drops behind the ridge around 7 pm in summer and paints the sea in layers of amber, rose and violet.
Corniglia itself is reached by climbing the Lardarina — a zigzagging staircase of 382 steps from the train station — or by catching the Cinque Terre shuttle bus that meets most trains. The viewpoint is a flat five-minute walk from the bus stop through the main caruggio.
