Ciapà Rock Platform (Corniglia's Secret Swimming Spot)
Most visitors to Corniglia assume the village has no beach — and that is exactly what keeps this flat limestone ledge, known locally as the Ciapà, blissfully uncrowded. Reached by a steep path descending from the southern end of the village, it sits just above the waterline and offers direct access to some of the clearest, deepest water in the Cinque Terre.
Finding the Ciapà
From Via Fieschi, follow the signs toward the southern coastal path and look for a rough stone track descending sharply to the left before you reach the main Sentiero Azzurro junction. The path takes about ten minutes and requires sure footing — flip-flops are not advisable for the descent.
The ledge itself is wide enough for perhaps twenty people comfortably. There are no facilities, no umbrellas, no bar — just flat warm rock, the sound of water, and the occasional fishing boat puttering past.
Swimming and Snorkelling
The water off the Ciapà is 8–12 metres deep within a few strokes of the rock, bottle-green and extraordinarily clear. Snorkelling reveals sea urchins, octopus and schools of bream in the crevices of the cliff base — bring your own mask and fins as there is no rental nearby.
The best swimming is between June and September when the sea temperature reaches 24–26 °C. Arrive before 10 am or after 5 pm to have the ledge almost entirely to yourself; midday in August it fills with those in the know.
