Grotta dello Smeraldo
Tucked into the base of a sheer limestone cliff just west of Conca dei Marini, this sea cave earns its name from the otherworldly emerald glow that filters through an underwater passage and illuminates the water from below. It is one of the Amalfi Coast's most genuinely magical natural spectacles, yet far quieter than Capri's Blue Grotto.
How the magic works
Sunlight enters through a submerged opening about four metres below the surface, refracting upward and bathing the cave interior in an intense, shifting green luminescence that makes the water look lit from within.
Stalactites hang from the vaulted ceiling and a ceramic nativity scene sits on the cave floor, submerged and visible through the crystal-clear water — a quirky Amalfitan tradition that has been in place since 1956.
Getting there
You can descend by lift or stairs directly from the SS163 coastal road, or arrive by wooden rowboat hired from the small dock below — the boat approach, skimming across open sea before ducking into the low entrance, is far more atmospheric.
Boat tours from Amalfi and Positano stop here regularly between spring and autumn, making it easy to combine with a broader coastal day trip.
