Église Saint-Nicolas de Combloux
The onion-domed bell tower of Saint-Nicolas is the most photographed silhouette in Combloux, appearing on practically every postcard of the village with Mont Blanc framed perfectly behind it. Built in the 17th century and expanded in the 18th, the church is a rare example of Savoyard baroque in an almost perfectly preserved mountain setting.
Architecture and Interior
The distinctive green copper bulb crowning the bell tower is a Savoyard architectural signature found only in a handful of villages in the Arve valley. Step inside and the interior surprises with gilded altarpieces, painted vaulting, and carved wooden choir stalls that feel entirely out of proportion to the village's modest size — testament to the prosperity of the old cheese and cattle trade.
Look closely at the side chapels for ex-voto paintings donated by local families over three centuries: small, naïve oil panels depicting miraculous rescues from avalanches and alpine accidents, a deeply human archive of mountain life.
The Village Square Around It
The square fronting the church is the social hub of Combloux at any season. Stone fountains, flower boxes overflowing with geraniums, and low stone walls create a scene that has changed remarkably little since the 19th century.
In December the square hosts the village Christmas market, and the tree lights reflect off the copper dome in a way that feels genuinely magical rather than manufactured. Café de la Poste on the square is the right place to sit with a café crème and watch the scene.
