Mercat des Peix i Mercat Municipal
Tucked into a handsome 19th-century iron-and-stone building just off the harbour, Ciutadella's covered market is where the island's fishermen, cheese-makers and vegetable growers show up before the tourists are even awake. Come early and you'll find Menorcan sobrassada, fresh llampuga (dolphinfish) and wheels of local Mahón-Menorca PDO cheese stacked like edible architecture.
What to Buy and What to Taste
The fish hall operates on a strict timetable tied to the fishing boats' return, so the best selection of red prawns (gambes vermelles), squid and local sea bass appears between 7 am and 9 am Tuesday through Saturday. Vendors are used to tourists pointing and asking prices — a kilo of local prawns typically costs €18–25 depending on the season.
Beyond seafood, look for homemade ensaïmades (the spiral pastry Menorca shares with Mallorca), artisanal gin from nearby distilleries, and small jars of flor de sal harvested from the island's southern salt pans. These make far better souvenirs than anything sold in the harbour gift shops.
The Social Ritual of Saturday Morning
Saturday is when the market swells with a weekly outdoor extension spilling into the surrounding streets, drawing farmers from the island's interior with their seasonal produce. Stone-fruit in June, fat figs in August, wild mushrooms in October — the stalls act as a live calendar of Menorcan seasons.
The café inside the market building serves one of the best value breakfasts in town: a tostada with tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil) and a café amb llet for under €3. Sit at the marble counter and watch the fishmongers wrap their last orders in newspaper before the morning rush ends.
