Ca's Ferrer de Sa Font Restaurant

Tucked into a vaulted stone cellar on Carrer Portal de Sa Font, Ca's Ferrer de Sa Font has been feeding Ciutadella's old town for decades without ever chasing trends. The menu reads like a love letter to Menorcan ingredients: locally caught fish, slow-braised meats, and the island's signature caldereta de llagosta (spiny lobster stew) made properly, with no shortcuts.

What to Order

The caldereta de llagosta is the dish that defines Menorcan cuisine and this kitchen does it with the seriousness it deserves — lobster from local waters, a base of slow-cooked tomato, onion and green pepper, finished with the lobster's own coral for depth. It must be ordered 24 hours in advance and costs around €55–65 per person, but represents one of the genuinely unmissable eating experiences in the Balearics.

For a more accessible lunch, the arrós de peix (fish rice, the Menorcan cousin of paella) and the grilled local squid with alioli are both excellent. Start with pa amb oli — thick bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with Menorcan olive oil — and a glass of cold Binissalem white wine from Mallorca.

The Setting and the Crowd

The dining room occupies a series of interconnected stone arches that keep the space cool even in August heat, with tables close enough together that conversations between neighbouring diners are inevitable and usually welcome. The atmosphere is unhurried in the distinctly Menorcan way — do not come if you need to be somewhere in two hours.

The restaurant draws a loyal local clientele alongside in-the-know visitors, which is always the best sign. Reservations are essential in July and August, recommended at all other times.
