Ruta del Vino de Valdepeñas
The Valdepeñas DO wine region begins just 35 km south of Ciudad Real, and a half-day drive through its sun-bleached bodegas is one of the most rewarding experiences in Castilla-La Mancha — not just for the wine, which is consistently underrated, but for the scale of it: vast clay tinajas (amphorae) the height of a man, and cellars that stretch underground for hundreds of metres.
Key Bodegas to Visit
Bodegas Félix Solís in Valdepeñas town is one of the largest wine producers in Spain and offers free guided tours of its extraordinary tinaja cellar — rows of centuries-old clay vessels holding tens of thousands of litres, a sight that stops most visitors in their tracks.
For a more intimate experience, Bodegas Real just outside Ciudad Real itself produces excellent Tempranillo and Airén blends and welcomes visitors by appointment for tastings paired with local charcuterie and manchego.
The Wine & the Landscape
Valdepeñas reds — made primarily from Tempranillo, locally called Cencibel — are structured, food-friendly wines that age beautifully and cost a fraction of their Rioja equivalents. The white Airén grape, grown across La Mancha's vast plains, makes a crisp, low-alcohol wine perfect for summer afternoons.
The drive south on the N-IV through the vine-covered plain, with the Sierra Morena rising on the horizon, is genuinely beautiful in September during harvest, when the air smells of fermenting must and tractors queue outside every bodega gate.
