Mercado Municipal de Abastos
Tucked just off the city centre, Ciudad Real's covered municipal market is where Manchegan gastronomy is at its most honest and vivid — stalls piled with saffron, manchego at every age, and air-cured meats that perfume the whole building. Arrive before noon on a Saturday and you'll find the city shopping like it's still 1985.
What to Buy
Look for locally grown azafrán de La Mancha — the real thing, sold in small glass vials by vendors who can trace it to specific villages in the nearby Campo de Criptana area. It's considerably cheaper here than in tourist shops.
The cheese counters offer manchego from young (fresco, barely two weeks old) to aged curado and viejo, plus lesser-known local varieties like queso en aceite, wheels preserved in olive oil that make extraordinary edible souvenirs.
Eating & Atmosphere
Several bar counters inside the market serve breakfast and mid-morning tapas — a glass of local Valdepeñas wine with a pincho of tortilla costs well under two euros and is one of the great bargains in Spanish travel.
The market is liveliest Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings when fresh produce vendors fill the outer stalls with Manchegan vegetables, including the fat pimientos del piquillo roasted on the spot over gas burners.
