Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Cholet
Housed in a striking 19th-century building on Place du Président Roosevelt, this dual-purpose museum pairs a serious collection of Vendée War history with an unexpectedly strong fine-art wing featuring works by Gustave Courbet and local painters of the Cholet school.
The Vendée War galleries
The Wars of the Vendée (1793–1796) shaped Cholet more than any other event in its history, and the museum does not shy away from the tragedy. Detailed maps, weapons, personal letters and large-format paintings reconstruct the Battle of Cholet in October 1793 — one of the bloodiest engagements of the Revolutionary period.
The curators present multiple perspectives, giving voice to both Republican and royalist Vendéen accounts, which makes for a nuanced, thought-provoking visit rather than simple hagiography.
The fine-art collection
Upstairs, 19th- and 20th-century canvases fill airy, well-lit rooms. The Cholet school of painting — characterised by warm tonal landscapes of the Bocage — is represented in depth and rarely seen outside the region.
Temporary exhibitions, often borrowed from the Louvre's travelling programme, bring fresh energy to the permanent hang. Check the museum's agenda: recent shows have included Flemish still-life and contemporary textile art.
