Mausolée de Bonchamps, Saint-Florent-le-Vieil

Thirty kilometres north of Cholet along the Loire, the abbey church of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil contains one of the most moving sculptures in France — David d'Angers' 1825 marble effigy of the Vendéen general Bonchamps, who in his dying breath ordered 5,000 Republican prisoners freed. Almost nobody outside France knows it exists.

The sculpture and its story

The recumbent marble figure of General Bonchamps — draped, serene, one arm raised in the famous act of clemency — is David d'Angers' masterpiece and was praised by contemporaries as equal to anything produced in Italy. It sits in the abbey nave with a simplicity that makes the encounter feel private even when other visitors are present.

The story behind it is extraordinary: after the catastrophic Vendéen defeat at Cholet in October 1793, thousands of Republican prisoners held in this very church were spared massacre on Bonchamps' direct order. His last words, 'Grâce aux prisonniers,' are carved into the plinth.

The village and the Loire view

Saint-Florent-le-Vieil itself is a gem of a small town perched on a rocky promontory above the Loire, with a panoramic terrace beside the abbey offering one of the finest river views in the entire valley — a broad, island-dotted sweep that feels biblical in scale.

The village has a handful of good crêperies and a small quay where you can sometimes hire a flat-bottomed boat in summer. Combine it with a drive through the Anjou wine villages of Montjean-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire for a perfect half-day loop from Cholet.
