Marché de Cour-Cheverny
Every Tuesday morning the small square in Cour-Cheverny village fills with local producers selling what the surrounding Sologne farmland does best: game terrines, wild mushrooms, fresh goat's cheeses and honey so dark it tastes of forest. It is small, unhurried and completely untouristy.
What to Buy and Who to Meet
Arrive before 9 am to catch the mushroom sellers at their best — chanterelles and ceps in autumn, morels in spring. The Sologne forest is one of France's great foraging territories and the market reflects that seasonal intensity.
Look for the cheesemaker from Contres who brings a Selles-sur-Cher AOC — a small disc of goat's cheese with a distinctive blue-grey ash rind and a clean, lemony paste. It is one of the Loire's great cheeses and far cheaper here than in any city fromagerie.
Eating Breakfast at the Market
The café on the corner of the square opens early and the terrace fills with locals who treat the market as a social ritual as much as a shopping trip. Order a café crème and a croissant and watch the village go about its morning.
A couple of stalls sell prepared food — particularly good are the rillettes de canard (duck rillettes) and the homemade quiches using local eggs. Buy provisions here for a château-grounds picnic later in the day.
