The most perfectly furnished château in the Loire Valley has been owned by the same family, the Huraults, for over six centuries — and it shows. Every room is a living interior, not a museum reconstruction, giving it a warmth that Versailles can only dream of.
A Living Royal Interior
Unlike many Loire châteaux stripped bare during the Revolution, Cheverny kept its contents intact. The King's Bedroom dazzles with Louis XIV painted ceilings, Flemish tapestries and original 17th-century furniture arranged exactly as the family intended.
The Dining Room is set as if guests are expected for dinner, with Delft porcelain and silver gleaming under candlelight. Wander slowly — every cabinet hides a curiosity, from Japanese lacquerware to a portrait miniature of Anne of Austria.
The Tintin Connection and the Trophy Room
Hergé modelled Moulinsart, Tintin's ancestral home, on Cheverny's white tuffstone facade. A permanent 'Secret of Moulinsart' exhibition in the orangery lets fans walk into panels from the comic strips, with original drawings and interactive displays.
The Trophy Room is genuinely arresting: 2,000 stag antlers cover every centimetre of wall and ceiling, each tagged with the year and hunt. It sounds macabre but the sheer obsessive geometry of it is unforgettable.
