Domaine de Cheverny Vineyards & AOC Wine Trail
Cheverny has its own AOC appellation, producing some of the Loire's most food-friendly whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Cheverny's signature grape, Romorantin, which makes the rare Cour-Cheverny designation. The flat, sandy soils around the village are laced with cycling-friendly wine trails linking a dozen family domaines.
Cour-Cheverny: A Grape Found Nowhere Else
Romorantin is a white grape planted in this tiny appellation and virtually nowhere else on earth. The wines are bone-dry, high in acidity with a flinty, quince-like character that pairs magnificently with the region's pike-perch and goat's cheese.
Domaine du Salvard and Domaine de la Desoucherie are two well-regarded estates that welcome walk-in tastings. Both sit within cycling distance of the château and offer free dégustation with a genuine welcome rather than a hard sell.
Cycling the Vignoble
The Loire à Vélo cycle route passes close to Cheverny, and local tourist offices distribute a free 25 km 'Circuit des Vignes' map linking the main domaines through sunflower fields and forest edges.
Hire bikes from Blois or from Cheverny village itself. The terrain is almost entirely flat, making it genuinely suitable for all fitness levels. Combine it with a picnic of local rillettes and Selles-sur-Cher cheese from the village épicerie.
