Marché des Halles Centrales
Cherbourg's covered market, the Halles Centrales on Rue au Blé, is one of the most atmospheric food halls in lower Normandy. Locals crowd the stalls every morning for butter-yellow Cotentin cheeses, just-landed fish from the Channel and thick slabs of andouille de Vire.
What to Buy and Eat
The cheese stalls are the undisputed highlight — look for Brillat-Savarin, livarot and the hyper-local fromage de Cherbourg, a creamy washed-rind round that rarely travels far from the peninsula. Pair a wedge with a baguette from the baker just inside the main entrance and you have the perfect harbour-side picnic.
The fish counters arrive freshest on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings when the Cherbourg trawlers have just unloaded. Whole turbots, spider crabs and fat Cotentin oysters are sold at prices that would make a Parisian weep with envy.
The Building and the Atmosphere
The 19th-century iron-and-glass hall floods with light on a bright morning, turning the produce displays into something almost painterly. Arrive before 9 am on a Saturday to catch the full buzz before the tourist coaches appear.
A handful of small café counters inside the hall serve café-calva — a Norman tradition of espresso alongside a shot of Calvados apple brandy — which is the most efficient possible way to start a market morning.
