Cité de la Mer
Home to the largest publicly accessible nuclear submarine in the world, the SNLE Le Redoutable, Cité de la Mer is Cherbourg's blockbuster attraction. Housed in the art-deco Gare Maritime Transatlantique where Titanic passengers once embarked, it blends deep-sea science with genuine maritime drama.
The Submarine & the Deep-Sea Aquarium
Walk through six decks of the 128-metre Le Redoutable and feel the claustrophobic reality of Cold War patrols — cramped bunks, torpedo tubes and all. It is the centrepiece of the museum and nothing else in Normandy quite matches it for sheer spectacle.
The aquarium section descends through recreated ocean zones, finishing at a 10-metre-deep tank where sharks and rays glide past at eye level. Allow at least two hours if you plan to do both properly.
The Titanic Connection
Cherbourg was the last European port of call for RMS Titanic on 10 April 1912, and the museum devotes a thoughtful permanent gallery to that final stop. Original artefacts, passenger stories and an atmospheric reconstruction of the first-class promenade make it genuinely moving rather than exploitative.
The building itself — a sweeping 1933 ocean-liner terminal — is worth admiring from the quayside before you even buy a ticket. The ironwork canopy and tiled floors are immaculate.
