L'Orangerie du Château Restaurant
Tucked inside the château's own grounds, L'Orangerie du Château is the most atmospheric place to eat in the entire Chenonceau area — a beautifully restored 15th-century outbuilding where you can have a proper Touraine lunch steps from the river, surrounded by the estate's own gardens.
What to Order
The menu leans on classic Touraine cooking with seasonal intelligence. The pike-perch (sandre) from the Loire with beurre blanc is a benchmark dish — silky fish, emulsified butter sauce with a sharp hit of local Muscadet, served with a tangle of river herbs. The rillons starter is as good as any you'll find at the Amboise market.
For dessert, the tarte Tatin made with Reinette apples from the estate orchard is the only rational choice. Pair it with a glass of the estate's own Touraine Blanc, which the sommelier will pour with evident pride.
Atmosphere and Booking
The dining room occupies the vaulted stone orangery that once sheltered Catherine de Medici's citrus trees through Loire winters. In summer, tables spill onto a terrace shaded by linden trees with a direct view of the château's west tower — arguably the best lunch backdrop in the Loire Valley.
Reservations are strongly recommended in July and August; walk-ins are possible at shoulder season. The restaurant is only accessible to château ticket-holders, so factor the entry fee into your lunch budget.
