Cher River Canoe Route Below Chenonceau
The most surreal way to see Château de Chenonceau is from the water, paddling a canoe directly beneath its six stone arches while the Grande Galerie passes overhead. The calm stretch of the Cher between Chenonceau and Civray-de-Touraine is one of the most beautiful — and most accessible — river paddles in the Loire Valley.
The Route and What You'll See
The standard downstream run starts at the canoe hire base at Chenonceau and follows the Cher for roughly 8 kilometres to Civray-de-Touraine, taking around two hours at a relaxed pace. The highlight is the passage under the château itself — the arches frame a perfect view back up at the building from water level that no land-based photograph can replicate.
Beyond the château, the river winds through willow-fringed banks and water meadows where grey herons stand motionless in the shallows. Kingfishers are almost guaranteed in the quieter stretches. The current is gentle enough for complete beginners.
Practical Paddling Tips
Canoe Kayak de Touraine operates hire and shuttle services from a base near the château car park, typically from May through September. Two-person canoes are the most popular option; single kayaks are also available. The shuttle back from Civray is included in the hire price.
Start before 10 am on summer weekends to have the river largely to yourself. Waterproof your camera or phone — the temptation to photograph the château from the water is irresistible and the risk of a wet drop is real.
