Château de Chenonceau
Arching gracefully across the River Cher on six slender arches, Château de Chenonceau is the most visited château in the Loire Valley after Versailles — and arguably the most beautiful in all of France. Its story is inseparable from the powerful women who shaped it, from Diane de Poitiers to Catherine de Medici.
A Castle Built on Water
Unlike any other Loire château, Chenonceau literally spans a river. The two-storey Grande Galerie stretching 60 metres across the Cher was added by Catherine de Medici after 1559, and during World War I it served as a military hospital — the crossing point between occupied and free France.
Walk the gallery at dusk when the last tour groups thin out and the light turns the river gold beneath your feet. The reflection of the arches in the still water below is one of the most photographed sights in the country, and it earns every click.
Gardens, Wax Rooms & the Wine Cellar
The two formal gardens — Diane de Poitiers' to the north and Catherine de Medici's to the south — are mirror images of rivalry rendered in box hedges and seasonal flowers. The Diane garden is planted with vegetables and cutting flowers exactly as it was in the 16th century.
Inside, the wax-figure rooms bring the château's female owners vividly to life, and the vaulted kitchen in the bridge piers is unexpectedly fascinating. Don't leave without descending to the wine cellar, where the estate's own Touraine AOC whites are sold at cellar-door prices.
Practical Timing
Arrive before 9:30 am or after 4 pm to avoid tour-bus crowds. The château opens daily year-round, closing only on Christmas Day. The evening son-et-lumière season (July–August) transforms the exterior into a light canvas after dark — book tickets online well in advance.
The estate is walkable from Chenonceaux village station (note the village spells its name with an 'x', the château without). The 15-minute stroll through the avenue of plane trees is itself a delight.
