The view that defines Chaumont
The terrace sits at the end of a long, tree-lined promenade that has been a favourite evening stroll for Chaumontais for centuries. On a clear day you can trace the full length of the viaduct from one end to the other, with the twin tiers of arches framed by the valley below — the definitive postcard image of the city.
Sunrise and sunset are the golden hours here. In winter, when the trees are bare, the view extends even further across the plateau; in summer the linden trees provide welcome shade and fill the air with a honeyed fragrance in June.
The neighbourhood around the terrace
The Boulingrin area sits within Chaumont's historic upper town, just a short walk from the Basilique Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the old medieval streets of the Haute-Ville. Strolling from the terrace through the rue Victoire-de-la-Marne gives a sense of the city's quiet, well-preserved provincial elegance.
A small public garden adjoins the terrace, with benches perfectly positioned for lingering. It is equally lovely in the evening when the viaduct is lit up and the valley below glows with the last of the daylight.
