Marché de Chaumont (Place de la Concorde)
Twice a week the Place de la Concorde and surrounding streets in the heart of Chaumont fill with local producers selling Haute-Marne cheeses, charcuterie, honey, and seasonal vegetables. It is the most direct way to taste what this corner of Champagne actually eats.
What to look for at the stalls
Arrive before 9 h on a Wednesday or Saturday morning and you will find the market at its liveliest, with farmers from the surrounding plateau unloading crates of mirabelle plums in late summer, bundles of wild mushrooms in autumn, and thick slabs of local Langres cheese — a washed-rind AOC speciality with a dimpled top perfect for filling with a splash of Marc de Bourgogne.
Charcuterie from the Haute-Marne is quietly excellent: look for andouillette, smoked saucisses, and terrines made by small family butchers who have been supplying Chaumont restaurants for generations.
Beyond the food stalls
The market also carries a good selection of local honey, artisan bread, cut flowers, and household goods, giving it a genuinely lived-in feel rather than a tourist showcase. Bakers from the surrounding villages often sell pain de campagne and brioche that are gone by 10 h.
Grab a crêpe or a hot sandwich from one of the mobile caterers, find a bench near the old town hall, and watch Chaumont go about its morning — this is the city at its most authentic and unhurried.
