Mont Revard Belvedere
Rising to 1,537 metres directly above Chambéry, Mont Revard delivers one of the most jaw-dropping panoramas in the northern Alps: on a clear day you can trace the full arc of the Belledonne massif, spy the glittering surface of Lac du Bourget far below and, in winter, watch the sun set behind Mont Blanc's white pyramid. The drive or bus ride up through beech and spruce forest is half the pleasure.
Getting to the Summit
In summer, a regular bus (line 30 from Chambéry, operated by Synchro Bus) winds up the hairpin road to the plateau in about 45 minutes. Cyclists tackle the climb as a classic local col, gaining nearly 1,000 metres of elevation from the valley floor — a serious but hugely rewarding effort.
At the top, the belvedere terrace at the Croix du Nivolet direction offers unobstructed views west over Chambéry's terracotta roofscape and east toward the jagged Lauzière and Bauges massifs. Bring a good map or the PeakFinder app to name every summit you can see.
Four Seasons on the Mountain
In winter, Mont Revard is a small but charming Nordic ski resort with 35 km of groomed cross-country tracks — one of the closest such resorts to a French city of Chambéry's size. The plateau also has snowshoe trails and a sledging area popular with local families.
In summer the meadows burst with wildflowers and the walking is superb: the GR96 long-distance trail crosses the plateau, and shorter loops through the Réserve Naturelle du Mont Revard take two to three hours at a gentle pace.
