Les Charmettes — Jean-Jacques Rousseau's House
Just two kilometres south of Chambéry's centre, tucked into a quiet wooded valley, sits the modest 18th-century manor where Jean-Jacques Rousseau spent what he later called the happiest years of his life, living with his mentor and companion Madame de Warens between 1736 and 1742. Inside the House
The rooms are arranged exactly as described in Rousseau's autobiographical Confessions: his small bedroom with its original walnut furniture, the kitchen where Madame de Warens supervised the household and the study where Rousseau taught himself botany, music and philosophy in a burst of self-directed learning that would shape the Enlightenment.
The curators have done a remarkable job avoiding the sterile feel of many house museums — personal objects, letters and botanical drawings are displayed with real warmth, and the audio guide (available in English) quotes directly from the Confessions so you hear Rousseau describe each room in his own words.
The Garden and the Valley
The terraced garden above the house is planted with the same species Rousseau catalogued in his botanical notebooks: medicinal herbs, fruit trees, kitchen vegetables and wildflowers collected from the surrounding hillsides. In June the lavender and rose beds are at their peak.
The valley of Les Charmettes is itself a pleasure to walk: a signed footpath leads from the house up through chestnut woods to a small chapel with views back over Chambéry, taking about 40 minutes at a relaxed pace. It is the kind of afternoon that makes you understand why Rousseau never wanted to leave.
