Marché de Chambéry — Place de Genève

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, Place de Genève and the surrounding streets fill with the colours and aromas of one of the best provincial markets in the French Alps. Local farmers drive down from the surrounding valleys to sell raw-milk Beaufort, hand-pressed crozets pasta, charcuterie studded with alpine herbs and jars of génépi liqueur that glow like bottled sunlight.

What to Buy and Eat

Head straight for the cheese stalls and ask for a sliver of Beaufort d'Alpage — the summer-pasture version with its golden paste and nutty depth is incomparably better than the supermarket block. Alongside it you will find Tomme de Savoie, Reblochon fermier and the tangy blue-veined Persillé des Aravis.

The charcuterie vendors sell diots (Savoyard pork sausages smoked over pine) and dried bresaola-style viande des Grisons that makes a brilliant picnic ingredient. Round things off at the honey stall, where local beekeepers offer lavender, fir and wildflower varieties from hives set in mountain meadows.

Market Rhythm and Surroundings

Saturday is the biggest day, when the market spills from Place de Genève into the nearby covered Halles and along Rue de Boigne. Give yourself at least two hours to wander without rushing. The cafés ringing the square open early and serve strong coffee and croissants — grab a seat outside and watch the city come alive.

After shopping, the Fontaine des Éléphants is just a two-minute stroll away, making it easy to combine market morning with a gentle tour of the old town. The elephants are cast iron and famously trunk-less at the top — a quirk that delights first-time visitors.
