Villa Bernasconi
While day-trippers queue for Villa d'Este, a far less visited jewel sits quietly on Cernobbio's main street: Villa Bernasconi, a flamboyant Art Nouveau villa built in 1906 for silk entrepreneur Davide Bernasconi and now open as a museum and cultural centre. The façade alone — covered in hand-painted majolica tiles, wrought-iron balconies and floral stucco — is worth crossing the lake for.
The architecture and interiors
Designed by Milanese architect Alfredo Campanini, the villa is a textbook example of Italian Liberty style: every surface competes for attention with sinuous plant motifs, peacock-feather mosaics and stained-glass skylights that flood the central staircase with coloured light. It is one of the best-preserved Art Nouveau interiors in Lombardy.
The restored rooms house rotating exhibitions on local history, silk manufacturing and the Art Nouveau movement itself. Permanent displays explain how the Bernasconi family's silk trade connected Cernobbio to global fashion markets from Lyon to New York in the early 20th century.
Why almost nobody goes
Villa Bernasconi sits on Via Regina — the same road that leads to Villa d'Este — yet visitor numbers are a fraction of its famous neighbour. The admission price is low, the crowds are minimal and the staff are genuinely enthusiastic about the building's history. It is the kind of place where you can spend an hour without seeing another tourist.
The villa's small garden café is a lovely spot for a coffee after the tour, shaded by a century-old magnolia tree. Check the villa's website for occasional evening concerts held in the frescoed salon, which are a particular treat in summer.
