Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Mesmin, Olivet

On the southern fringe of Orléans, the Loire and its tributary the Loiret create a braided floodplain of islands, backwaters and alluvial forest that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from the city centre. The Réserve Naturelle du Val de Loire at Saint-Mesmin protects 1,500 hectares of this landscape and is one of the best places in inland France to watch migratory birds without specialis

What You'll See on the Water

The Loire here is broad and shallow, divided by gravel bars and sandy islands that shift with every flood. Between October and March, thousands of common pochards, tufted ducks and Eurasian wigeons gather on the backwaters, alongside regular sightings of kingfishers darting between the willows. In summer, little ringed plovers nest on the exposed gravel bars.

The Loiret — a short, spring-fed river that rises at the Fontaine de la Bouille in Olivet and rejoins the Loire after just 12 kilometres — is navigable by canoe and flanked by a flat gravel path ideal for walking or cycling. The water is unusually clear for a French river, and you can watch large pike holding station in the current.

Trails, Cycling and Practical Access

A well-marked 8-kilometre walking circuit begins at the Maison de la Réserve in Saint-Mesmin and loops through alluvial forest, past observation hides and along the riverbank. The terrain is completely flat and suitable for all ages and fitness levels; the path surface is firm gravel throughout.

From central Orléans, the reserve is reachable by TRAM Line A to Saint-Mesmin — the journey takes about 20 minutes. The Loire à Vélo cycling route also passes directly through, making it easy to combine with a longer ride east toward Châteauneuf-sur-Loire or west toward Meung-sur-Loire.
