Montée des Châteliers, Amboise
Climb the steep cobbled lane called Montée des Châteliers from central Amboise and you reach a limestone clifftop terrace that delivers what many photographers consider the definitive Loire Valley panorama: the broad silver river bending below, the Château Royal d'Amboise perched on its promontory and the Île Saint-Jean splitting the current in two.
The View Itself
The terrace sits above the troglodyte cave dwellings carved into the tufa cliff — you will pass their whitewashed façades on the way up. At the top, a low stone wall is the only thing between you and a sweeping 180-degree view that stretches several kilometres upriver toward Tours.
Late afternoon light turns the river into hammered silver and the château's towers glow amber. Bring a wide-angle lens if you shoot with a camera; the scene is almost too broad for a standard frame.
Combining with Nearby Sights
The Château Royal d'Amboise is five minutes' walk downhill and well worth the entry fee for its Gothic chapel, where Leonardo da Vinci is buried. The great polymath spent his last three years at the nearby Clos Lucé manor — now a museum — just 500 metres from the château gates.
The troglodyte caves along the cliff road have been inhabited since the Middle Ages; several are now wine cellars where local Touraine Amboise AOC wines are stored at perfect temperature year-round. Look for hand-painted signs offering dégustations.
