Marché de Blois — Place Louis XII
Every Saturday morning, the old quarter of Blois erupts into one of the finest weekly markets in the Centre-Val de Loire, spilling across Place Louis XII and the surrounding streets with stalls piled high with Sologne asparagus, ripe Touraine goat's cheese and freshly caught Loire sandre. This is where local chefs shop and where you should too.
What to Buy and Eat
In spring, look for the slender green asparagus grown in the sandy soils south of Blois — vendors sell it by the bundle, often still muddy from the morning harvest. Pair it with a wedge of Selles-sur-Cher, the ash-dusted goat's cheese with AOC protection that you will find on almost every stall.
A cluster of hot-food vendors near the church sells galettes de sarrasin stuffed with local chèvre and honey, and paper cones of fried goujons de Loire — small river fish battered and fried on the spot. Eat standing up, watching the Château de Blois loom over the rooftops above.
Timing and Getting There
The market runs from around 07:30 to 13:00 every Saturday. The best produce — particularly the cheese and the freshest fish — goes quickly, so aim to arrive before 09:00 if you want first pick.
Blois train station is a 10-minute walk downhill from Place Louis XII. The TGV and Intercités trains connect Blois to Paris-Austerlitz in about 1 hour 20 minutes, making a Saturday market-and-château day trip from the capital entirely feasible.
