Victoria Peak & the Peak Tram
Rising 552 metres above sea level, Victoria Peak delivers the most iconic panorama in Asia — a glittering wall of skyscrapers tumbling into Victoria Harbour, framed by green hills and open sea. Riding the historic Peak Tram to get there is half the thrill.
The Ride Up
The Peak Tram has been hauling passengers up the steep hillside since 1888, and the eight-minute funicular journey remains one of Hong Kong's most memorable experiences — skyscrapers tilt at wild angles as you climb through lush Mid-Levels greenery.
Sit on the right-hand side of the carriage on the way up for the best unobstructed views of the city spilling below you. Book tickets online in advance to skip the long queue at the Lower Terminus on Garden Road.
What to Do at the Summit
The paid Sky Terrace 428 inside Peak Tower sits at 428 metres and offers a full 360-degree sweep over the harbour, Kowloon and the South China Sea — well worth the entry fee on a clear day.
For a free and far quieter alternative, walk left out of the Peak Tower to Lion's Pavilion, a Chinese-pagoda-style lookout, then continue along Lugard Road — an easy, mostly flat trail that circles the summit through forest and opens up surprise harbour glimpses at every bend.
Arrive around 4 pm to catch daylight views, golden-hour photography and then the dazzling night skyline all in one visit — the city lights reflected in the harbour after dark are unforgettable.
Insider Tips
The clearest air is between October and March; summer haze can obscure the far-distance views, though the immediate cityscape remains dramatic year-round.
If queues for the tram are long on the way down, Bus 15 from the Peak Bus Terminus winds back to Central Pier through leafy residential roads — a scenic and painless alternative.
