Tai Kwun — Centre for Heritage & Arts
At 10 Hollywood Road stands one of Central's most surprising places: a beautifully restored compound of colonial-era police headquarters, magistracy and Victorian prison cells that reopened in 2018 as a world-class arts and heritage centre. Many visitors walk straight past it — their loss is your gain.
History You Can Touch
Tai Kwun was once the site of three government institutions: the Central Police Station, the Central Magistrates' Courts and Victoria Prison. The massive restoration project, completed in 2018, preserved the original red-brick barrack blocks, granite staircases and iron-barred cells while adding two contemporary gallery buildings — JC Contemporary and JC Cube.
Wander the open parade ground, peer into restored prison wings and read the heritage panels that trace Hong Kong's colonial legal history. Entry to the courtyard and main heritage areas is completely free.
Art, Food & Hidden Bars
Rotating contemporary art exhibitions fill the gallery spaces, ranging from large-scale installations to photography and local design — the programming changes regularly, so check the Tai Kwun website before you visit.
The compound's cafés and restaurants are built into the original cell blocks and barracks, making for an atmospheric lunch stop. Some of the more adventurous spots have converted individual cells into intimate bar seating — you genuinely drink your cocktail inside a Victorian prison cell.
Getting There & Combining Stops
Tai Kwun sits right on the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator route; hop off at the Hollywood Road exit and it's a two-minute walk. Combine it with a stroll along Staunton Street to PMQ (35 Aberdeen Street), a former police married quarters turned creative boutique hub, just five minutes away on foot.
The surrounding SOHO streets are lined with galleries, independent coffee shops and murals — budget at least two hours to do the whole neighbourhood justice.
