Graham Street Market

Tucked between Queen's Road Central and Hollywood Road, Graham Street Market is Hong Kong Island's oldest open-air wet market — a riot of colour, noise and scent that has survived skyscrapers, redevelopment and supermarkets for over 160 years. This is where Central's chefs and grandmothers still shop every morning.

What You'll Find

Stalls spill across Graham Street, Gage Street and Peel Street in a colourful web of fresh produce, live seafood, tropical fruits imported from Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan, cut orchids, dried noodles and preserved Chinese sausages hanging in open air.

Some vendors still use traditional hand-painted signs — a genuine rarity in modern Hong Kong — and the narrow pedestrian-only lanes buzz with vendors calling out their daily offerings in a distinctly local rhythm.

Along Gage Street a short strip of butchers displays unusual cuts of meat, while small noodle stands and ready-to-eat stalls make it easy to grab a cheap and authentic street breakfast or lunch on the go.

The Perfect Contrast

The market's greatest photo opportunity is the juxtaposition of hawker stalls nestled directly beneath gleaming glass towers — old Hong Kong and the financial district occupying the exact same block.

Most vendors have a working command of English and are genuinely friendly; don't hesitate to ask for a taste of unfamiliar fruit or a recommendation on seasonal produce.

When to Visit

Come early — between 8 am and 11 am — when the market is at its liveliest, the produce is freshest and the light is soft and golden for photography.

The market is pedestrian-only, but the lanes are narrow and steep; it can become very crowded on weekend mornings, so weekday visits reward you with a more intimate, local feel.
