Sustjepan Peninsula Trail at Sunset
While most visitors circle the Rat Peninsula on the flat harbour-side path, the Sustjepan trail on the opposite side of town climbs through fragrant pine and cypress forest to deliver epic, unobstructed views across Cavtat Bay, the three small islands offshore, and all the way back to Dubrovnik's old city walls glowing on the horizon. It is the best sunset spot in the area — and almost no one goes
The Trail Itself
The Sustjepan loop starts near Hotel Croatia and winds uphill through dense Mediterranean forest. The full circuit takes roughly one hour at a relaxed pace, with the gradient steepening briefly near the top before levelling into a panoramic ridge walk.
Shaded benches appear at intervals — perfect for pausing to watch the boats crossing the bay far below. The path eventually descends back to the coastal promenade, so you can slot it seamlessly into a longer waterfront stroll.
Golden Hour on the Ridge
The trail faces west-northwest, which means the final 45 minutes before sunset are extraordinary: the light turns the limestone cliffs amber, the sea shifts from turquoise to hammered gold, and Dubrovnik's walls catch the last rays on the horizon.
Come prepared with water, comfortable shoes, and a charged phone camera. The forest provides shade for most of the walk, making it bearable even in July and August when the harbour promenade bakes in the afternoon heat.
