Cavtat Old Town & Harbour Promenade
Cavtat's old town wraps around a small peninsula flanked by two tranquil bays, its 14th-century stone buildings, green shutters, and terracotta rooftops tumbling down to a palm-lined harbour where superyachts moor alongside wooden fishing boats. The Harbour & Its Backstreets
The heart of the town is the waterfront promenade along Luka Bay, where café terraces, artisan shops, and the baroque Church of St Nicholas sit within metres of each other. The church dates from the 15th century and is worth a quick look inside for its 19th-century paintings and the carved altarpiece at the main altar.
Push one street back from the water and the tourist density drops immediately. Narrow cobblestone lanes reveal the Renaissance Rector's Palace — now home to the Baltazar Bogišić Collection of manuscripts and artefacts — and quiet residential courtyards draped in bougainvillea.
The Promenade Loop
The flat, pedestrian-only path that follows the entire coastline of the Rat Peninsula is Cavtat's greatest pleasure: pine forest on one side, the Adriatic on the other, with hidden bathing platforms and rocky coves appearing every few hundred metres. The full circuit takes about 30 minutes at a strolling pace, or longer if you stop to swim.
In the evening the harbour transforms into a gentle passeggiata, with families, sailors, and day-trippers from Dubrovnik filling the terrace bars as the sky turns pink over the bay. A water taxi from Dubrovnik Old Town harbour (approx. €15 each way) drops you right on the promenade — one of the most scenic short sea crossings on the coast.
