Vallée de Lutour & Cabane de Cayan
While every visitor heads south to Pont d'Espagne, the parallel Vallée de Lutour branches east from Cauterets into a wilder, quieter world of waterfalls, high pasture and grazing Pyrenean horses. The trail to the Cabane de Cayan at 1,780 m is one of the valley's best-kept secrets.
The Walk In
The trail starts at the end of Route de la Raillère, a 2 km drive from the town centre, and follows the Gave de Lutour upstream through mixed beech and fir forest. The path gains 450 m over 5 km — steady but never brutal — passing the Cascade de Lutour, a 30 m ribbon waterfall that is at its most spectacular in late May when snowmelt is peaking.
Unlike the Pont d'Espagne circuit, you are unlikely to encounter a tour group here. The path is well-marked (yellow waymarks) but not paved, so proper trail shoes are worthwhile.
The Cabane & the High Pasture
The Cabane de Cayan is a working shepherd's stone hut used in summer for transhumance grazing. In July and August a shepherd sometimes sells fresh tomme de brebis and buttermilk directly from the hut — check with the Cauterets tourist office before your walk to confirm if the season is active.
Above the cabane the valley opens into a wide cirque of alpine grass and scree where izards (Pyrenean chamois) are regularly spotted at dusk. Sit quietly on a boulder for 20 minutes and your chances improve dramatically.
