Marché de Cauterets — Wednesday & Saturday Morning Market
Twice a week the Place Georges Clemenceau fills with stalls selling raw-milk Pyrenean cheeses, violet-skinned garlic from nearby Lourdes, wild bilberry jam and hand-carved walking sticks. It is the most honest 30-minute snapshot of valley life you will find.
What the Stalls Actually Sell
The cheese table run by a Barèges shepherd typically lines up tomme de brebis aged in a cave, a runny fromage frais sold in small plastic tubs, and the blue-veined Bleu des Causses that travels up from further south. Bring cash — most vendors are card-averse.
Look for the stall selling Berlingots de Cauterets, the town's own striped hard-candy confection flavoured with mint or violet. They have been made here since 1849 and are the edible souvenir of choice; the main confiserie on Rue de la Raillère also sells them year-round.
How to Work the Market Like a Local
Arrive by 8:30 am to catch the farmers before the tourist coaches arrive at 10:00. The bakery stall from Boulangerie Millet usually sells out of its walnut bread by 9:15 — consider yourself warned.
After shopping, cross the square to the covered terrace of Café de la Paix for a café crème and a croissant. It is the unofficial debrief point for every local who just sold or bought something.
