Piazza Bastione & the Borgo Antico Walls
You don't need to climb all the way to the castle to find Castelsardo's most romantic viewpoint. Piazza Bastione, a small belvedere terrace tucked along the ancient city walls at the entrance to the Borgo Antico, delivers a sweeping eastward panorama of the coastline that is at its absolute best in the last hour before sunset.
The Town's Secret Belvedere
Piazza Bastione sits at the point where the medieval city walls meet the edge of the promontory, offering unobstructed views looking east along the coast. The combination of the fortified walls in the foreground, the pastel-coloured houses of the old town stacked above, and the turquoise Gulf of Asinara below is the defining image of Castelsardo.
A couple of low-key cafés flank the square, making it the ideal spot to order a Campari spritz and watch the light change colour on the water. Locals know it well; tourists tend to rush straight up to the castle and miss it entirely.
Sunset: Castelsardo's Golden Hour
Castelsardo is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sunset spots in northern Sardinia, and Piazza Bastione captures that magic from a privileged angle. As the sun drops behind the headland, the castle walls and the town's ochre and terracotta facades ignite in warm gold, reflected in the calm waters of the gulf far below.
For an even higher vantage point, continue up through the Borgo Antico's narrow lanes to the Punto Panoramico above Via Fontana Vecchia — a scenic lookout that frames the Doria Castle against the open sea and has earned a near-perfect rating from visitors.
The Walk Between Viewpoints
The route from Piazza Nuova up through the old town to Piazza Bastione and then on to the castle is the single best walk in Castelsardo — roughly 20 minutes of gentle climbing through lanes lined with artisan basket shops, geranium-draped balconies, and sudden sea glimpses between the buildings.
The same streets that lead to the castle also follow the edge of the old city walls, offering continuous coastal views as you ascend. Do it without a map; getting mildly lost is half the pleasure.
