Castello dei Doria & Museo dell'Intreccio Mediterraneo

Perched at the very crown of Castelsardo's volcanic promontory, the 12th-century Castello dei Doria is the town's beating heart — a medieval fortress built by the powerful Genoese Doria family that still dominates every photograph of the northern Sardinian coast. Inside its thick walls you'll find one of the island's most unexpected museums, entirely dedicated to the art of Mediterranean basket we

A Castle Above the World

Built in the early 12th century by the Doria family of Genoa, the Castello dei Doria sits 88 metres above the Gulf of Asinara, commanding views that stretch east along the Sardinian coast, west toward Asinara island, and — on crystal-clear days — all the way to the mountains of Corsica on the horizon.

Walking the ramparts is the single best way to understand why this rocky promontory was chosen as a stronghold nine centuries ago. The panorama is a full 360 degrees: terracotta rooftops, turquoise sea, and rugged macchia scrubland tumbling down to the shore below.

The Weaving Museum Inside the Walls

The Museo dell'Intreccio Mediterraneo, housed within the castle itself, documents the ancient craft of intrecciatura — the weaving of dwarf palm leaves, rushes, and asphodel into baskets, hats, bags, and decorative objects. Castelsardo has practiced this tradition for centuries, and the museum traces its spread across the entire Mediterranean basin.

The collection is compact and beautifully arranged, with tools, historical pieces, and contemporary works side by side. Combine your visit with a hands-on basket-weaving workshop, bookable on site, to leave with both a souvenir and a story.

Getting the Most from Your Visit

Arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the tour-group rush and to catch the softest light on the castle's trachyte stone. The climb through the Borgo Antico's steep lanes to reach the entrance is itself a pleasure — lined with artisan shops and flower-draped doorways.

Allow at least 90 minutes: 45 for the museum and rampart walk, and another 45 to linger at the top terrace with a pair of binoculars and the Gulf of Asinara spread out below you.
