Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Lledoner, Penyeta Roja

Perched on a distinctive outcrop of red sandstone on the northern edge of the city, the hermitage of La Mare de Déu del Lledoner offers the most dramatic panoramic viewpoint within easy reach of Castellón — and almost no tourists. The red rock glows like embers at dusk.

The Climb & the View

The Penyeta Roja — 'little red rock' — is a geological oddity: a low but strikingly coloured sandstone bluff that rises abruptly from the flat Plana lowland, making it visible from miles around and giving it an outsized visual presence. A paved path and steps lead from the car park to the hermitage terrace in under 15 minutes.

From the terrace you see the full geometry of the Castellón plain laid out below: the city's rooftops, the blue stripe of the Mediterranean, the industrial port of El Grau, and to the west the forested ridges of the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. On exceptionally clear winter days the mountains of Ibiza are visible on the sea horizon.

The Hermitage & Its Festival

The small whitewashed hermitage dates to the 17th century and houses a much-venerated image of the Virgin. It is the focal point of the Romeria de les Canyes, held every third Sunday of May, when thousands of Castellonenses walk from the city centre to the hermitage carrying canes decorated with rosemary — one of the most authentically local festivals in the region.

Even outside festival season the site has a contemplative stillness. A shaded picnic area with stone tables sits just below the terrace, making this a favourite Sunday-morning escape for families. Bring water — there is no café on site.
